Wisdom teeth

When wisdom teeth need to come out, we make it gentle.

Wisdom teeth typically emerge between 17 and 25. Some have room. Many do not. Here is when extraction is the right call.

When extraction is needed

Insufficient space in the mouth is the most common reason for extraction. When there is not enough room, the wisdom teeth become impacted (cannot fully emerge or develop properly). Impacted wisdom teeth can lead to pain, infection, crowding, and damage to adjacent teeth.

Even fully emerged wisdom teeth can be hard to clean because of their location at the back of the mouth, making them more prone to decay and gum disease.

Signs and symptoms

  • Persistent or recurring pain in the back of the mouth, jaw, or near the ear
  • Swelling and inflammation of the gums or jaw
  • Difficulty fully opening the mouth
  • Gum infection (food trapping, swelling, bad taste)
  • Crowding and shifting of neighbouring teeth

Benefits of extraction

  • Prevents decay, gum disease, and infections
  • Eliminates pain that radiates to jaw, ears, and surrounding teeth
  • Reduces the risk of dental crowding and bite misalignment

The doctors at Dentistry on Fanshawe have completed multiple hands-on courses to attain the skills required to remove wisdom teeth safely. A professional diagnosis is always needed to ensure that an extraction really is the best option for your dental health and future.
